Materials Add to toolbox

Back

Raw Materials are natural resources that business people use to create products or services to sell to their customers, examples include oil, iron and wood.

These are then processed and changed into a different state in order to be used in the finished good:

  • Fresh mangos – fruit smoothies sold in supermarkets
  • Premises and hair dye – hair dressing service

You need to do thorough research to determine all the materials you will need that you will use directly in your product/service as well as the tools you may use to create the product/service.

When doing your research on all the materials and tools that you will need for your business, ensure you check that the resources meet the following requirements:

  • Variety of material options to choose from
  • What the materials are made of and how they are produced
  • Performance characteristics – how the material/resource will affect the other components you plan to add and what it will do to the product/service you are building
  • Cost of resources
  • Quality of resouces
  • How much stock of this material do the suppliers keep (in case you need some urgently)
  • Transporting the materials from the supplier to you/your manufacturers
  • Service and convenient features your supplier is able to offer (e.g return policies, payment terms and conditions, quality assurance processes your suppliers use)
